Watching Marie Kondo’s Tidying on Netflix has really got me in the mood for home improvement, and I’m not the cleanest or tidiest person, but I do aim to be as eco-friendly as possible!
Some of the best cleaners you can get are completely natural so it’s definitely worth experimenting with making your own organic cleaners as it may save you money and the hassle of tracking down the right brand of eco-cleaner.

If you don’t fancy that, I will give you my recommendations based on products that I use at home. The good news is that it can actually work out much cheaper to use eco-friendly or natural products instead of harsh chemicals.
Just like Marie Kondo, I’ve divided the home into the key areas: Kitchen, General (living rooms and bedrooms), Bathroom and Laundry. I managed to clean my home using just like products (and a vacuum cleaner) so it is possible, and my cupboards are much less cluttered as a result which makes me very happy! I have also started buying in bulk so I need to shop less, which is great as I really dislike shopping.
KITCHEN
1. Ecover washing-up liquid
I’m a big fan of Ecover as their products are cruelty-free, mainly made from recycled plastic and they are committed to becoming even greener by 2020. If you buy their washing-up liquid in bulk, then you can save money by decanting it into a small bottle for the sink and using the big bottle to refill it.
2. E-cloths
Microfibre cloths are a great way to get things cleaner by using fewer chemicals, as the fibres help to grab dirt particles. You can use different grades of cloth for different jobs, whether it’s cleaning or polishing that you need. These cloths will clean pretty much all surfaces as they are soft, so they can’t do the damage that scrubbers can.
3. Silicone scrubbers
These silicone scrubbers are really easy to clean and hygienic so they are a great alternative to foam scrubbers that get manky very quickly. They also breed germs which these silicones ones won’t do, as they have less places for bacteria to live, are easy to clean and they dry really quickly once they’re hung up.
4. Ecover dishwasher tablets
I’ve used these for a few years so I can tell you that they will clean your dishes. Using biodegradable tablets means that you are putting less harmful chemicals into the oceans, and you won’t need rinse aid as these tablets are a one-stop shop for dish cleaning.
GENERAL
5. All-purpose cleaner
This Ecos cleaner is suitable for all hard surfaces, carbon neutral and made using 100% renewable energy. You can use this non-toxic formula to fill your spray bottles and it is vegan and cruelty-free.
6. Microfibre mop
Mopping is one of my least favourite jobs, but at least if you use a microfibre mop, you know that you’re picking up the dirt instead of just moving it around! The handle is made from aluminium and the mop head can be machine washed. It can be used without chemicals, won’t soak your floors and is slim enough to get into small spaces.
7. Recycled plastic dustpan and brush
Charity shops can be a great place to pick up cleaning utensils like dustpans and brushes and sometimes people will give them away for free! Otherwise, Greener Cleaner has this version made from a blend of wood pulp and recycled plastic. It’s extremely durable and the tough bristles are easy to clean as well as picking up dirt effectively.
BATHROOM
8. Spray bottles
These glass spray bottles can be filled up using your chosen cleaning product (whether it be bought or homemade). The glass bottle means that it will look classier (or glassier) on your shelf as well as being more eco-friendly!
9. Ecozone drain sticks
If your plug holes get blocked (and mine do more often than I’d care to admit!) and you hate pouring chemicals down them, then there is a solution! These Ecozone sticks contain natural bacteria and enzymes to break down plug hole gunk and eliminate bad smells.
LAUNDRY
Is laundry everyone’s least favourite job? It certainly is mine when it’s my turn. Luckily, I’ve found a way to make laundry cheaper, even if I can’t make it fun.
10. Eco Egg
Eco egg is a great way to save money as well as cleaning your laundry without using harsh chemicals. You can get 720 washes out of just one egg (depending on which one you buy) so it can last you a few years! The eggs are completely refillable so you just need to insert more cleaning pellets. It’s also hypoallergenic for those with sensitive skin.
11. Stain Remover
If you have any tricky stains like red wine or grass then I would suggest applying stain remover to that spot before putting the garment in the washing machine. Eco egg has a stain remover that you can use before putting your wash in with your egg.
