7 reasons to love Neal’s Yard Remedies

In a world where sustainability, accountability and ethics are more important than ever, I wanted to see how Neal’s Yard Remedies held up.

It takes a lot to impress me as I’ve written about ethics for years, but this company have some seriously ethical credentials.

These are the 7 reasons to love Neal’s Yard Remedies and why they’re still one of our most ethical beauty companies:

1. They smell so, so good

The number one thing that I love when using them is the smell! They really do smell incredible and I thoroughly love the aromatic foaming bath. The lavender essential oils are tangible without being overwhelming. It’s scent really helps me to get to sleep after a bath.

2. The iconic blue packaging

Much of Neal’s Yard packaging is in their iconic blue bottles which made from glass. These bottles look amazing in your bathroom, and they’re a feature in themselves. It isn’t all about looks as they protect the product from UV rays. This means they can use fewer preservatives in them.

Glass doesn’t attract dirt like plastics do so that another plus. Naturally, they can be recycled and the aim is for all of their packaging to be fully recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2025.

3. Produced in an eco-factory

All their products are made in an award-winning eco-factory in North Dorset. This means that their carbon footprint is kept low by using rainwater and greywater recycling, energy-efficient heat pump systems and solar panels.

While that’s all impressive, what really resonates in this age of extinction is that it is set in acres of organic gardens. These chemical-free fields and meadows can be shared by wildlife that desperately needs the habitat. Here they grow calendula, St. John’s wort, verbena and the lemon balm used in their formulations.

4. Made in the UK by a family-owned company

Neal’s Yard Remedies was established in 1981 as a modern-day apothecary in Convent Garden. It was bought by the Kindersley (of Dorling Kindersley fame) family in 2006 and has been with them ever since.

5. All natural ingredients

Using natural and organic ingredients is key to Neal’s Yard’s success as there are so many benefits to avoiding harsh chemicals. This means they don’t use things like parabens or silicones. This is in accordance with the precautionary principle of avoiding ingredients that have problematic associations.

6. They’re genuinely ethical

Incredibly, Neal’s Yard was the world’s first health and beauty company to be awarded a score of 100/100 for ethics by the Ethical Company Organisation. This means that they have good relationships with growers around the world to use wild-harvested, organic, fairly traded and sustainable producing methods. They have been certified by Fair For Life and FairWild.

7. They’re activists at heart

Neal’s Yard supports the World Land Trust, the Microbeads Ban, the Bee Lovely campaign and Organic is best with the Soil Association. These organisations plant trees, protect forests, campaign against microplastics, help bees and support organic farming.

In this day and age, we expect our companies to give back and support campaigns that make the world a better place. We expect activism and responsibility – both social and environmental. I’m happy to see that Neal’s Yard Remedies are doing just that.
