A woman listens to a podcast

Here are 9 insightful and interesting podcasts by women who will inspire you:

1. Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place

Fearne Cotton, like many of the women in this article, has struggled with her mental health so now she hosts the Happy Place podcast to discover how other people manage theirs.

I’ve actually heard some great advice on this podcast, about life as well as specifically about mental health. Fearne knows everyone, so there is a wide spectrum of interesting guests, including Maisie Williams, Mary Berry, Zoe Sugg and Natalie Dormer.

2. Adwoa Aboah’s Gurls Talk

Adwoa Aboah hosts the Gurls Talk podcast where she interviews some truly incredible people from an huge spectrum of backgrounds. Some of their stories have brought me to tears, but it’s also incredibly uplifting.

Aboah herself has had real struggles within her own life which is what makes her the perfect person to have an understanding of the issues facing women today.

Gurls Talk is interactive and features submissions from its community and while it’s aimed at slightly younger women, I still love listening to and being inspired by it.

3. Bryony Gordon’s Mad World

Bryony Gordon is a true inspiration to me for speaking for frankly about OCD (which I also have) and other mental health issues. She’s also written some great books, including The Wrong Knickers, which is an awesome read.

In Mad World, she has upfront and bold discussions with people about their mental health and it’s a great way to feel less alone as a listener.

It helps that she has amazing guests, including Prince Harry, Mel B and Stephen Fry, but not everyone she interviews is a celebrity which is great.

4. Table Manners with Jessie Ware

Singer Jessie Ware and her mum Lenny host a dinner party podcast, sometimes with other members of the household chiming in and it’s very relatable.

I’m not a foodie, but I love their laidback approach to podcasting and the fact that they don’t varnish over anything, including mother and daughter bickering.

They talk to a range of guests and while many are in the music industry, I personally prefer it to the George Ezra podcast which is too music-specific for me.

Guests include Nigella Lawson, Sam Smith and Sandi Toksvig.

5. Love Stories with Dolly Alderton

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have likely heard about Dolly Alderton’s bestselling book, Everything I Know About Love. It’s about growing up as a privileged woman in the UK with the focus on the love and relationships that she has along the way.

It’s very well written and now she asks her fellow authors and friends to share their love stories with her. She interviews Stanley Tucci, Matt Haig and Lilly Allen amongst others and has some really beautiful conversations about their lives.

6. Reni Eddo-Lodge – About Race

Reni Eddo-Lodge wrote the enormous bestseller, Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race. It’s a truly insightful and thought-provoking book about race and now she has a podcast of the same name.

The podcast is a truly non-prescriptive and articulate look at race and everything that surrounds it. She interviews many experts for a really thorough conversation about a range of race-based topics and the answers are truly fascinating.

It deservedly won silver for Best New Podcast in the 2019 British Podcast Awards.

7. Finding Annie with Annie Mac

DJ Annie Mac is looking back on her life and piecing it all together – starting with when she was born and when she gave birth to her children. She travels down memory lane with friends from radio, including Sara Cox and Nick Grimshaw. It’s really like an audio autobiography, which makes sense for someone who’s spent their live as a broadcaster.

EDIT: This podcast is now called Changes with Annie Mac.

8. Mary Portas – Work Like A Woman

Mary Portas is a no-nonsense business mogul who has written a manifesto for change in the workplace called Work Like A Woman. In this podcast, she continues her campaign for better workplaces, based on various themes within the book.

She interviews people like Elizabeth Day, Anna Whitehouse (Mother Pukka) and Caroline Criado-Perez about how we can improve things and there’s loads of advice in there.

9. Feminists Don’t Wear Pink by Scarlett Curtis

Scarlett Curtis had a bad operation that left her with chronic pain and then suffered PTSD as a result. In the years she couldn’t attend school, she learnt about feminism which she credits with helping her through this time.

She has curated an anthology of people talking about feminism called Feminists Don’t Wear Pink and Other Lies that features some incredible women. This accompanying podcast features some of them, like Saiorse Ronan and Jameela Jamil as well as other inspirational stars like Mindy Kaling from The American Office.

If you want to read any of the books that I’ve mentioned about feminism, then check out my article about them here.
