How to drink alcohol in an eco-friendly and sustainable way

If you like to have a drink on a night out or with dinner then why not make your weekend ritual as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible?

Making our own alcohol, as well as local and organic drinks are all having a resurgence, plus unusual or home-brewed booze is a great conversation starter!

There’s never been a better time to get on board and sample biodynamic wines from Italy, organic champagne from France and organic ale from England, your tastebuds are in for a treat! * **

** Always drink responsibly and in moderation. If you think that you or someone that you know has a problem with alcohol then visit DrinkAware for more information.

If you live in an area with a temperature that lends itself to growing grapes, then you could even try growing your old organic grapes which you can later turn into wine! The Organic Backyard Vineyard has more information on exactly how to do just that, or you could try making your own cocktails!

Big book of cocktails

There are so many organic delicious spirits, juices and mixers on the market – all in glass bottles – that it would be rude not to try them. Making cocktails also means that people who don’t drink alcohol can join in with a cheeky mocktail!

If you’re in need of some inspiration then the Big Book of Cocktails has you covered and can be bought in ebook format! Otherwise there are loads of great blogs and Instagram accounts dedicated to making the perfect drink.

Reusable straws

No drinks party is complete without reusable straws! These metal ones come with a brush to clean them and keep them hygienic between uses. A must for all your cocktail creations.

Recycled wine glasses

If you need glasses or kitchenware, there are often people giving them away and charity shops often have them, sometimes even still in the box! Otherwise I would suggest recycled glasses like these funky fair trade numbers that are made in Mexico.

Organic wine hamper

If you can’t quite decide what to buy, are looking for a gift or you’re having a dinner party – then why not invest in a hamper? The selection gives you the perfect opportunity to do a wine tasting with friends in your own home and learn more about the flavours you like. You’ll (hopefully) never choose a wine you don’t like again!

Organic ale

If you’re not into wine, then never fear as organic beers and ales are also gaining in popularity. This honeydew golden ale is a good place to begin, before you start exploring the world of ales further. It’s also worth researching if there is anything brewed in your local area that you can try.

If you’re creative then you can brew your own organic beer, which will really impress your friends if it tastes good! This starter kit from Pilsen Ecological Ale contains full instructions and organic ingredients so you can impress you friends even more with your eco-friendly brew.

Organic gin

Gins are popping up all over the place and there are so many ways to drink them! I recommend this organic gin from Kew Gardens as a starter but I would definitely mix things up with any other sustainable gins you can find. Try them with fresh blueberries, orange, grapefruit, or even rosemary to complement the flavour of the gin, depending on your tastes.

Special occasions

Organic bubbles are great as gifts or to crack open to celebrate something special. Champagne is great if you want something bubbly with a drier taste and Prosecco is sweet and light. Either way, it’s great to raise a glass to celebrate good times or successes, especially when you know your plonk is from a sustainable source!

Until about a year ago, I didn’t know too much about drinking wine or beer, or the processes that are involved. However, I went on a vineyard tour in Essex in England and learnt more and I was surprised at how interesting I found it all!

You can find experiences like beer tasting and vineyard tours for reduced rates from voucher websites and travel sites like Travelzoo. If you can find a good deal, you can invite your friends (who will be eager to join!) and you can all share transport for the ultimate sustainable trip out!
