Deciding whether to get married at home or abroad is a question many couples face when choosing where they wish to tie the knot.
The numbers are pretty high: in 2022, the ONS shared statistics that 71,000 UK residents got married abroad in 2019 – that’s just under a third of the 220,000 marriages that occurred in England and Wales that year.
If you’re thinking about heading abroad for your nuptials, it’s important that you do your research first though.

Logistics
Getting married abroad might seem like a romantic and interesting way to make your love for one another official.
However, you will need to first consider whether it will be logistically possible – or more of a headache than it’s worth. Think about how easy it would be for people to get there such as elderly relatives who may not be able to travel easily, as well as where people would stay in relation to the venue.
You may also want to consider where in the world you want to get married versus your honeymoon location, or if you want to stay in the same destination after the ceremony to enjoy time as a couple. There are plenty of logistical factors to consider and a long list of things you’ll need to organise or pay a wedding planner to sort out on your behalf. As such, if you’re not into admin, getting married abroad might not be for you.
Finances
Getting married abroad may seem more expensive than at home, however, you may find that there are bargains available that can significantly reduce the cost.
As such, it’s absolutely crucial you weigh up different packages and what they offer, versus your available budget. If you are slightly lacking funds, look into whether or not applying for a loan would be right for you – but be sure to pay close attention to the terms, and whether you can afford to pay it back.
Legalities
While you may be able to have a ceremony abroad, it’s important to work out whether the venue you have in mind has the correct legal status to allow you to get married.
