It’s not surprising that waterless beauty is on the rise, as from an eco-friendly perspective, it makes sense because no liquid means smaller bottles or containers!
The beauty industry uses a lot of water, with some products like shampoos containing up to 95% water, it comes after agriculture which is naturally the number one consumer of ‘blue gold.’
It’s not only the water usage itself but the added weight of transporting it. You can significantly lower your carbon footprint by transporting less, something which waterless products can easily achieve.
As well as cosmetics brands, cleaning product companies are also going waterless so there is certainly room for a waterless revolution across different industries.
Naturally, I was happy to receive some samples from INCLUSEV London so that I could see what it’s all about as an avid eco blogger and writer on all things sustainability.
The products that I tried – face wash, body wash, hand wash and shampoo – were all in powder form in small bottles. The bottles are plastic but they are clear so they can be reused or recycled. An added bonus is that they are vegan and not tested on animals!
Out of all of them, I thought the hand wash was the best as you can pop it in your handbag to wash your hands on the move. It makes more sense than taking a liquid with you as it’s lighter with much less chance of mess.
With the shampoo, it was hard to get a good lather going, so for that reason, I would say that a solid shampoo might work better if you have thick hair like mine. If you have fine hair a light shampoo like this might work better for you.
It’s much easier to get a lather on your skin with powder beauty and the face wash and body wash seemed to foam up better. They both gave my skin a gentle and nicely scented clean. It didn’t irritate my skin at all which was great as I’m not a fan of harsh skin products. The body wash foamed enough that I could shave my legs with it, something that I always look for in any shower product!
Overall, I’ve seen that waterless beauty certainly does work even though the movement towards it is still in its infancy.
I’m excited to see where waterless beauty goes because as with any solutions that are better for the planet, I imagine we’ll see wonderful innovations as more and more brands emerge and get on board with sustainable beauty. It’s definitely about time.
