I had some of the best vegetarian meals and snacks from supermarkets like 7-Eleven and FamilyMart when I was travelling around Taiwan, so I wanted to share them with you.
As Taiwan is one of the more expensive Asian nations, it’s a great way to make your budget go further! The great thing about hotels and supermarkets in Taiwan is that you can use their hot water and cooking facilities for your food, as well as eating it.
Here are 11 vegetarian foods to buy from supermarkets like 7-Eleven in Taiwan if you’re on a budget:
1. Vegetarian pasta
If you want something simple and you need some vegetables then try microwaveable vegetable pasta.
2. Tea eggs
Boiled tea eggs can liven up any meal, especially noodles and they’re available all over the place in big bowls like this one. You can also get flavoured ones like chilli eggs in packages too.
3. Vegetarian instant noodles
There are so many vegetarian noodle flavours, from seaweed to mushroom to hot and spicy, you can even get mock meat like the one below!
4. Vegetarian soups
One easy snack meal is an instant soup and you can get tofu, seaweed, miso or egg soups – just add water and you’re ready to go!
5. Corn on the cob
Boiled corn on the cob is great if you’re craving veg, they usually season them with spices and not butter.
6. Crispy seaweed
Addictive crispy seaweed is one of my all-time favourite snacks. After a lot of research, I know that hot chilli is my favourite flavour. It’s so salty and crispy that it’s incredibly moreish.
7. Fried tofu
It’s worth checking the sushi section for fried tofu stuffed with rice and served with pickled ginger. A cheap and easy snack that goes from the shelves fast.
8. Rice crackers
Savoury rice crackers are so addictive and they come in many flavours, from salt and pepper to seaweed.
9. Baked sweet potato
Delicious baked sweet potatoes can be found all over Taiwan and you can add sauces and salt to them if you wish.
10. Vegan jerky
This Hoya vegan jerky was one of the best veggie snacks that I’ve ever had! It’s made from dried and fried tofu and I highly recommend it if you find it.
11. Bagels and sweetbreads
If you fancy something sweeter, then there are bagels and breads on offer that you can toast yourself or back at your hotel.
I hope this list shows you that there are loads of vegetarian and vegan meals to eat on the cheap in Taiwan. These snacks will certainly keep you full and make your budget go further.
This is not an exhaustive list by any means, and I’m sure there are many more veggie snacks to discover!
